Variety Of Wood In Log Home

Variety of wood in Log Home

We’ve spoken with many couples planning their log home, and one of their biggest challenges is coming up with “color.” They fret over drywall, tile, area rugs, drawer pulls, upstairs vs. downstairs color schemes, cabinets, and flooring.

The doors, floors, trim, cabinets, and even the interior walls can be a symphony of wood.

From the hickory cupboards to cherry railings, yellow pine fl oors to oak mantles, decorating with several wood species can take the monotony out of a log home and turn it into a natural work of art. We mix almost every kind of wood to give the home some definition.

In home interiors and log home interior design, the shape and color of the log wood selected is most important since the log wood used will reflect a range of moods, complexities and emotions. How much log wood is used in log home interiors is a major decision.

Log house interior design today seldom uses logs for every wall in the home. For example, the visual effect of smaller diameter logs in rustic log house interiors can be subtle and somewhat subdued. Larger diameter logs will probably require you to build a larger log home, larger rooms, higher ceilings and consequently need more furnishings.

Interior Light Levels – log house interiors can feel dark and oppressive with dark wood, insufficient natural light and inadequate windows or skylights. Windows give log home interiors natural light, enlarging and enlightening the room space. Creating beautiful log home interiors has many different ways in which the log home interior design can work well, ranging from informal handmade country style to a modern looking interior.

Log Home Designs – Basic Concepts

By David Buster

Log house designs can be divided in several ways.

Shape of Log Used – the logs used in your log house can be shaped in various ways.

Type of Log Wood – there are many wood species commonly used in log house designs.

Peeled or Milled Logs – peeled logs used in log house designs will have the bark and outer sapwood removed. Milled logs are run through machines that will create the desired log shape when finished. The log surfaces will be more smooth and uniform in milled logs.

Corner Systems Used – here are the four main corner systems used in log house designs:
Usually the passing logs have a cutout into which the butt log fits.
Dovetail Corners – these corners are used mostly with square or rectangular logs. As the logs are stacked, the ends of one wall’s logs will be locked into the perpendicular logs.
Both logs then extend past the corner. This corner style sacrifices some of the traditional log cabin or log home look.
